Thank you for pointing me to Mazzocchi's reply: you're both right on the style, delightful, and on the arguments, insightful: the interoperability by friction explained in the article is what I was looking for when I mentioned a sort of "carrot and stick" principle. Being much impressed by the witty style and the interesting and controversial questions (damned if you do/damned if you don't) outlined in Spolsky's post I failed to point out that I am not a hundred per cent on what he sustains (Internet Explorer Market Share 98% ??!?!?, DOCTYPE is a myth, Robustness Principle, not taking part in the flame war :) ). I'd have rather also pointed out that I am and advocate for PragmaticIdealism (tm) : i.e. just use web browsers that work with actual web sites and don't mess up web standards (Firefox, Opera, Safari, Galeon).

Hm. I'd rather point to the thoughtful and peaceful reply by Stefano Mazzocchi, who offers many more insights about the central issue of standards than Spolsky is able to do: it is really a delight to read.
